In the relentless theater of the wild, every meal is a calculated risk. A lioness surveying a herd of zebras isn't just looking for the tastiest target; she is solving a complex mathematical equation where the variables are energy, time, and safety. This biological decision-making process is known as Optimal Foraging Theory (OFT).
At its core, Optimal Foraging Theory is an ecological model that predicts how an animal behaves when searching for food. Since an animal’s fitness (its ability to survive and reproduce) is tied directly to its energy intake, natural selection favors individuals that forage efficiently.
The theory assumes that evolution has "fine-tuned" predators to make choices that maximize the net rate of energy gain per unit of time. If a predator spends more energy catching a meal than that meal provides, it is on a fast track to extinction.
