An African elephant generates an immense amount of metabolic heat just by existing. Moving that massive body around under the relentless equatorial sun creates internal heat at a rate few other land animals ever experience. You might assume an animal built for hot environments would have an army of sweat glands to cool itself down, much like humans do. But elephants lack sweat glands almost entirely, with only a few specialized glands located near their toe cuticles. They cannot sweat out a fever, nor can they rely on perspiration to chill their skin when the savanna reaches triple-digit temperatures.
