HRIDAY — the National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana — was launched on 21 January 2015 to solve a problem most urban schemes ignore: how do you develop a city without damaging the heritage that makes it worth visiting?

What made HRIDAY different is that it covered both tangible heritage — monuments, ghats, temples — and intangible cultural heritage. Alongside conservation, it built civic infrastructure: water supply, roads, sanitation, drainage, street lighting and tourist amenities. A stated objective was the economic growth of artists and craftspeople working around these heritage sites, using tourism as the driver.
The mission concluded on 31 March 2019. Infrastructure created under it is now maintained by Urban Local Bodies. Many aspirants still write HRIDAY as an ongoing scheme — it isn't.
Exam note: do not confuse HRIDAY with PRASHAD. HRIDAY sits under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs; PRASHAD is a Ministry of Tourism scheme for pilgrimage sites. This distinction has appeared in Prelims-style questions.
