Derek Van Schaik | Why criminals live up to their birth names @DerekVanSchaik | Uploaded January 2023 | Updated October 2024, 4 hours ago.
Have you ever heard someone’s name and said yourself, “what did they expect was going to happen?” What’s the criminal psychology behind that or even Bryan Christopher Kohberger with his initials which are very similar to BTK?
In psychology, there’s a hypothesis called nominative determinism, or name-driven outcome. This is where you may gravitate towards areas of interest or work that fit your name. So Tom Kitchin became a chef. Ashley Seawright became an eye doctor, Les McBurney became a fire fighter, Joshua Butt became a gastroenterologist. The psychological basis for this is implicit egotism which we have an unconscious preference for things that involve ourselves.
Bryan studied the infamous BTK serial killer intensely under famous professor and writer Katherine Ramsland, while sharing similar initials. His similar initials alone of course did not cause him to commit the crimes but may have added to his fascination and feeling a connection with BTK.
So be careful what you name your kid, name him Rocky Rambo, and he may not turn out so good. Yeah, that one was already tried, and he became a double murderer.
