Catoctin Mountain Park is a gem of the Maryland Mountains. Easily accessible from Washington DC, Catoctin is a wonderful wilderness retreat from the rigors of an urban life, all protected by the National Park Service. In fact, it was created with this exact dynamic in mind - to provide a recreation area for the urban masses. But, what you might not know about Catoctin Mountain Park, is that it was never supposed to be a National Park at all, that is until the Presidential Retreat, Camp Camp David, threw a wrench into these plans.
