In September 2013, a Russian-owned ship headed to Mozambique. But the crew needed some technical help so it docked on the Beirut Port, Lebanon. On inspection, it was found that the ship was carrying 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate. So, it was stopped and forbidden to sail.
When all the efforts to release the ship was failed, the crew abandoned the ship. Later in 2014, the ship was detained by authorities, and the ammonium nitrate on board was unloaded and stored in a facility at the port known as Hangar 12. It is located at just a few minutes' walk from the main Beirut city.
