“Deaf people will never be able to experience life fully. They’ll never be able to fully experience movies and music, their child’s first words, birds in the morning…”
This is a very common comment with numerous variations from hearing people, and one that’s been part up again recently. Every time a deaf person expresses being proud of being deaf, someone will push back and claim that deafness is a terrible thing to experience.
While being deaf in a hearing society isn’t without its frustrations and complications (but that is an accessibility and ableism issue), it isn’t the end of the world. And, quite frankly, I’m not interested in hearing chirping birds against my will at 7:30am on a Saturday.
(Of course, all deaf people have their own experiences and opinions. But unless that specific deaf person says so, maybe don’t be weird about sounds and “missing out” on them.)
