November 17, 2024 service for the First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City, featuring music by guest performers Megan and Don from Trash Moon Collective, a homily by lay minister Melinda Pettingill-Patterson, and a sermon by the Reverend J Sylvan.
Lay minister Melinda Pettingill-Patterson's homily addressed the complex and problematic subject of justice. She used the character of Dumbledore from the ''Harry Potter'' books, as well as the disappointing transphobia of the character's author JK Rowling, to illustrate the flaws and unintended harms that can arise from well-meaning actions, stressing the importance of acknowledging and committing to repair of the harms one has caused, even when they were not intended.
Rev. J's sermon called on the congregation to truly listen to those they aim to serve. Sharing a personal story about navigating severe food allergies at gatherings, they expressed their hope for a collective effort toward a more welcoming and inclusive community, one which genuinely honors all of its members' needs.
