Before entering a market, you should know who the main players. Not only is this important to your success down the road, but it highlights one of the strengths of local food: relationships!

Perry Baptista ran many of the the Bright Agrotech market relationships and teaches the Upstart University course, “The Four Markets”. Today she shares a snippet from that course describing the main players at farmers markets: the committee and the market manager.

Farmers markets are run by a variety of organizations that may be for profit or non-profits.

Most farmers markets are run by a committee that is in charge of the logistics of the market. They approve vendors, collect fees and commissions, create layout for the market, and ensure compliance rules. The committee also hires market managers.

The market manager is a key player at the farmers market that is in charge of enforcing rules, collecting commissions, etc. You want to forge a strong relationship with the market manager early on an sell them on the value that you bring to their market.
