AT&T, and its design division, Bell Labs, was largely responsible for the telephone system of the last century, but some groundbreaking work was also done by independent R&D operations, away from the corporate inertia of AT&T. Ramsey McDonald developed an automatic mobile telephone system that was deployed by some independent telephone companies, and it was far ahead of the AT&T offerings of the time. Bill Hopkins tells his story in this presentation from the 2022 Antique Wireless Association Conference.
