The story of Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, one of the Indian Air Force’s heroes of the 1999 Kargil War, is now being revisited through Netflix’s six-episode series Operation Safed Sagar: The Untold Story of the Kargil War. Ajay Ahuja was not a fictional character but a real fighter pilot and Flight Commander of No. 17 Squadron, the Golden Arrows, who was killed during a reconnaissance mission over Kargil while searching for fellow pilot Flight Lieutenant K. Nachiketa, whose MiG-27 had crashed.
In this video, we look at who Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja was, his career in the Indian Air Force, his role in Operation Safed Sagar, the tactical photo reconnaissance missions flown during the Kargil War, and what happened during his final flight on 27 May 1999. We also explain how Ajay Ahuja’s MiG-21 was hit by a Stinger missile, what happened after he ejected, and how his sacrifice was recognized with the Vir Chakra. Beyond the battlefield, we look at the real-life story of his wife Alka Ahuja and son Ankur and how his family rebuilt their lives after his death. The video also explores the real story behind Netflix’s Operation Safed Sagar and how Ajay Ahuja’s legacy is being brought to a new generation.
Correction: In the video, the name of former Air Chief Marshal B. S. Dhanoa has been mispronounced. We apologise for the error.
