Located just west of Lone Pine, CA, Whitney Portal is the gateway to Mount Whitney, which is the highest point in the lower 48 states at 14,505 feet. In order to get to Whitney Portal, one must drive through the Alabama Hills, which is an area of interesting hills and rock formations on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
On the day of our visit, a section of the main road from Lone Pine to Whitney Portal was closed, and we were forced to take some detours. This worked out great, however, because it allowed us to drive through some parts of the Alabama Hills that we otherwise may not have visited.
In this video, we drive through the hills and up the steep road to Whitney Portal. At the top of the road, we stop and enjoy some waterfalls and creeks. We then drive back down the road and see some dramatic views of the hills and valley below before taking another detour through an especially beautiful section of the Alabama Hills.
