The phrase "whistling past the graveyard" means to remain cheerful and optimistic in difficult circumstances or adversity.

I'm not sure where the phrase came from; some have suggested the phrase probably originated because in olden days, it was believed ghosts and spirits could be frightened away by noises, so one would sing or whistle while traveling past a cemetery in order to stay safe from the ghouls. Thus, "whistling past the graveyard."
