A man made Whirlpool
Designed to control stored sea water in a flow to clear collected sand in the channel.
The outflow is controlled through a narrow slot in the stonework, the height of the entire structure; It was later housed in a blockwork enclosure and, with later demolitions, has become a hazard for the unwary or over adventurous ... I would like to have got a closer look into the centre of this arrangement ... another day, perhaps? Built in 1834 for the Harveys. It appears that there were two sets of sluice controls, to direct the flow. I am curious as to the purpose of the two upstands on the top coping. Granite mooring posts can be seen either side of the sluice housing
