The great thing about starting your self-publishing journey in 2023 is that you have so many options. And so much information to help you.
The bad thing is… you have lots of options and a mountain of information to sort through.
Today I’m going over the strategy that I end up recommending to most authors. Not all, but most. Depending on your goals, your genre, and your vision for your book, this may not be ideal. But, most authors I know what they book in as many retailers as they can handle, more chances for readers to find it. They also want control and to avoid mistakes that will cost them time and energy down the road. And pretty much every author I’ve ever talked to has asked me “how do i get my book on Amazon.” This strategy covers all those concerns:
For this author, I would recommend uploading their book to:
Amazon KDP - print + eBook
Draft2Digital - eBook
IngramSpark - Print
ACX - audiobook
Findaway Voices - audiobook
That’s 5 platforms. Which seems like a lot, but there are dozens of others out there. I like this mix because you get direct control over your listing on Amazon.com and Audible. And you also make use of aggrgeators to get your book everywhere else, anywhere that isn’t Amazon.
Here’s how it works:
With Amazon KDP you can upload your book, and barring any errors in the file, it can be live within 72 hours on Amazon.com. You can elect expanded distribution, but I wouldn’t do that. It’s not as promising as it sounds. Besides, you can get your expanded distribution through:
Draft2Digtial for eBooks
And IngramSpark for Print.
Technically, you could do both print and eBooks with both D2D and IngramSpark.
But, I’m making this recommendation for 2023 as of right now, this moment. And D2D has a print beta available, so still working out the issues. And IngramSpark is great for print distribution, but the eBook side leaves something to be desired. If you want to cut down on the number of logins, they just pick one of these, but as it stands today, that is how I recommend getting your book out wide.
For the audiobook side, I like going direct with Audble and Amazon via ACX because Amazon is just less glitchy when you go direct, but I get the rest of my audiobook distribution via Findaway Voices. You can also distribute to Amazon and Audible via Findaway Voices to either cut down on number of logins or because ACX is not available in your country.
That’s it folks. Thats my best recommendation for getting the widest distribution with the fewest number of logins. While some of us may want more direct control over every single platform, it is way more to manage. In my own personal strategy I have more platforms than this, but I elected a more complex route. I have my books with Google Play as well and I also sell them direct. If you’re just getting started, start small. You can add on more later.
