We begin at the otherworldly Hogback section, with steep drops of more than 500 feet on both sides of the road, and wind our way down into Calf Creek Canyon as we head westbound. As we continue, the byway winds through the Escalante region, where the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument unfolds with its vast, colorful layers of geological history, offering panoramic views from overlooks like the spectacular Powell Point. From there we climb up through Bryce Canyon National Park, where the famous hoodoos create a fairyland of stone, then descend into Red Canyon, where were greeted by towering, pink-tinged rock spires. After reaching the western end of the byway, we jump back to the beginning of the byway at its eastern end in Torrey, Utah just outside Capitol Reef National Park, and our drive ascends through the forested highlands of the Dixie National Forest, where the air cools and the scenery shifts to lush greenery. We finish off our scenic drive by driving the Hogback section again, this time in the opposite direction heading eastbound. This drive not only connects two national parks but also traverses through a tapestry of Utahs natural beauty, from deep canyons to high plateaus, all under the vast, brilliantly clear sky.
