On May 31, When We All Get to Heaven received a Peabody Award for the 10-part documentary podcast about a queer church facing the AIDS crisis in the 1980s and '90s.
At the heart of the series, distributed by Slate, is a remarkable discovery: 1,200 cassette tapes of sermons, memorials, and music recorded inside the church during the worst years of the crisis. A church member rescued them after they'd been thrown away.
The Eureka Street Productions team listened to a sample of about 325 of those tapes, which When We All Get to Heaven draws on.
"These are stories of a people living through a terrible, terrifying time with no end in sight," Gerber says in her speech. "They are studying how to hold collective grief, claim joy, and keep showing up even when the path is unclear and the outcome uncertain. We are such a people living through such a time and we have a lot to learn from these voices."
Lynne Gerber accepted the award at the @PeabodyAwardChannel ceremony on behalf of the team (Gerber wrote and produced the show alongside Siri Colom and Ariana Nedelman of Eureka Street Productions).
