If you’ve seen ads for Trump Accounts for kids, but also know anything about Donald Trump, you might be wondering “Free $1,000 per baby? Okay, what’s the catch?” It’s a classic.
The initiative, which launched this past July 4, promises $1,000 to every baby born between January 2025 through December 2028. Family members can contribute up to $5,000 a year to these accounts until the child turns 18. At face-value, it seems like a way to give America’s children a leg ahead. But upon closer inspection, these accounts serve as a tax break for the upper-middle-class and the rich.
"I want you to notice that it’s up to $5,000 a year. If you’re a middle class or working class family, you don’t have that money, you don’t have $5,000 a year."
