Do you know when to switch to CTAF when flying an instrument approach to a non-towered field?
Many instrument students assume that once you're cleared for the approach, it's time to switch to CTAF. But, that's not the case. These are two separate instructions that happen at different points in the approach.
When ATC clears you for the approach, they’re authorizing you to begin flying the published procedure. You’re now cleared to fly what’s on the chart, but you’re still talking to ATC.
Only when they specifically instruct you to switch frequencies should you leave the controller and begin making advisory calls on CTAF.
