What a way to start the morning at Okaukuejo.
One by one they appeared, and before long the waterhole was surrounded by elephants. Adults, younger animals and several small calves all gathered around the water for what looked like a very welcome morning drink.
This is one of the things I love most about watching Okaukuejo. One moment the waterhole can be almost completely quiet, and a short while later you suddenly have elephants arriving from every direction.
And when elephants arrive like this, there is much more going on than simply having a drink.
Elephant families are built around incredibly strong social bonds. Females generally remain with their family throughout their lives, together with their calves, and the group is usually guided by an older, experienced female known as the matriarch. Her knowledge can be particularly important when it comes to finding water, food and moving the family safely through the landscape.
The young calves in a herd also grow up surrounded by more than just their mothers. Other females can help protect, guide and care for them, which is one reason seeing elephants together like this always feels so much like watching a family.
Looking at this gathering, we can't know from the camera alone whether every elephant belongs to one family. Elephant society is much more complex than that. Related family groups can separate, reunite and spend time together, particularly around important resources such as water.
But whatever the exact relationships between them, it was quite a sight.
