A magnificent Gemsbok bull (Oryx gazella) visits the NamibiaCam waterhole for a refreshing drink before continuing across the Namib Desert.
Gemsbok are among the most successful large mammals living in arid environments. They can survive extreme temperatures and obtain much of their water from the plants they eat, allowing them to thrive where many other animals cannot.
Both males and females carry impressive horns, but mature bulls often develop heavier, thicker horns and powerful neck muscles used in territorial disputes and dominance displays. These antelope are well adapted to desert life and can tolerate body temperatures that would be dangerous for most mammals.
As Namibia's national animal, the Gemsbok is a symbol of strength, endurance, and survival in one of the world's harshest environments.
