Is this YouTube title a desperate attempt to get more views? Absolutely, but not completely untrue. While making fun of Sonic Colors Ultimate will never not be funny to me, at the end of the day, it's just a really bad port of an otherwise good, albeit divisive, Sonic game. And a Sonic game old enough to have people nostalgic for it already... man, do I feel old...
Now remember how Sonic Colors had a Nintendo DS port launched alongisde the main game on the Wii? Well, the common consensus in the Sonic fanbase is that the DS version of Colors is the superior game, despite being just a 2D game on handheld, due to its fun level design, gimmicks and pacing and just being overall a more "true Sonic game" compared to HD Colors, which the latter feels like a Sonic game designed by Nintendo for people who didn't like Sonic games to begin with. (I'm getting to talking about the fangame too, just hold on...)
Now Sonic Colors Demastered aims to go the Sonic Advance spritework instead of the chunky, even though charming, 3D models... and honestly I like it a lot more like this, not only that, but even a story mode different from the main game or the DS version and I like it. The dialogue is genuinely well written and in character compared to whatever writing HD Colors had and it get a chuckle out of me on quite the number of occassions.
Now, the most important part, the gameplay... is genuinely well done. I think the devs behind this had a tough balancing act when making it. Colors, especially on Wii, had a more methodical approach to level design compared to Sonic games prior that veered into non-stop action, especially with Unleashed. And I'm happy to say that Sonic Colors Demastered feels like a happy middle ground between Unleashed/Rush and the OG Colors. The ranking system encourages fast time above all else, but rings and points do matter. Also the ranking system is genuinely challenging like Sonic Rush. Controls feel fluid and level design is really well thought out.
Only complaints are collisions issues and accidentally homing attacking on an enemy instead of double jumping but I'll chalk it up as issues inherent to the engine this fangame uses.
Sonic Colors Demastered gets a whole hearted recommendation from me :).
