How do you know when to pick your tomatoes?

Can you pick them when they’re green and let them ripen on your kitchen counter? Do you need to wait until your tomatoes are fully ripe? Or…. not? Gardenstead’s vegetable experts answer a question from our Facebook community in this video!

The answer? Our experts recommend that you don’t pick your tomatoes when they’re green, but you can pick them when they’re starting to blush. You can also leave your tomatoes on the vine/plant until they’re fully ripe — it all depends on your personal growing situation.

Do you have pests (especially squirrels) who are eyeing your luscious tomato fruits?
Do you know what the common tomato pests are and how to get rid of them?
Do you have human passers-by who are equally eyeing the fruits of your labours? Or do you have a trouble-free vegetable garden and your tomatoes are in no danger?

When do you pick your tomatoes? Let us know in the comments below!

Gardenstead is an online gardening community and plant lovers channel of gardeners who love to get their hands dirty, both indoors and outdoors. Our gardeners run the gamut. They are vegetable gardeners, houseplant nurturers, small space gardening engineers, herbalists, flower enthusiasts and succulent aficionados.

Our goal has always been to connect gardeners in an inclusive gardening community, foster and share knowledge, and make gardening resources available to everyone.

As we grow, we seek to expand our conversations about gardening and to
cultivate a mindful embrace of nature and the healing and grounding properties
to be found in it.

Plants cultivate connections between people — from urban settings of balcony gardens
and small spaces to rural backyards with larger and more expansive gardens. We hope
you’ll join us as we continue to nurture these connections and create new ones.
