Why Learning to Receive Is Just as Important as Learning to Give

We've all heard the saying, **"It's better to give than to receive."**

But what if we've misunderstood it?

Many of us take pride in being the helper—the caregiver, the problem solver, the person everyone can count on. Yet when someone offers *us* a compliment, a gift, or even a helping hand, our first instinct is often to say:

*"Oh, you shouldn't have."*
*"I'm fine."*
*"I don't need anything."*

The problem is that giving and receiving are two halves of the same act. Someone else's generosity can only be fully expressed if we're willing to receive it.

Learning to graciously accept kindness isn't selfish—it's a gift to the person offering it.

In this video, I share why simply saying Thank you. I really appreciate this." can strengthen relationships, bring more joy into your life, and allow others to experience the happiness that comes from giving.

As a physician, I've also seen how many people with chronic illness spend their lives taking care of everyone else while neglecting themselves. Learning to receive care, support, kindness, and love is often an important part of healing—not just emotionally, but physically as well.

I'd love to hear from you:

Do you find it easier to give or to receive?
