**Will Eating ½ Cup of Flax Seeds Make You Gain Weight?**

Why do I recommend up to ½ cup of flax or chia seeds in my Hyper-Nourishment® smoothies when many plant-based doctors recommend only a couple of tablespoons a day?

And with all those additional calories... won't that make you gain weight?

This question came up during a recent conversation on @CHEFAJ 's YouTube channel, and I LOVE it because it gets to one of the biggest misunderstandings we have about nutrition:

🔥 Food is more than calories.

A calorie is simply a measurement of energy. But your body doesn't treat every calorie you eat identically.

The nutrients we consume can be used as structural components of our cells, influence cell signaling and metabolism, and affect inflammation and immune function. Omega-3 fatty acids, for example, are important components of cell membranes and are particularly important to the brain, nervous system, and immune system.

That's very different from thinking:

Calories in → calories burned → everything left over becomes body fat.

That was the simplistic model I was taught in medical school, too.

This is also why I don't believe we should be afraid of whole-food sources of healthy fats like flax and chia simply because they're calorie-dense.

For years, I've used larger amounts of omega-3-rich flax and chia as part of my Hyper-Nourishment® protocols, and I've seen people improve their health while also losing excess weight—not gain it.

🥬 Nutrition isn't just about how much energy a food contains.

It's about what your body DOES with the nutrients you give it.

This clip is from my recent conversation with Chef AJ. I always enjoy getting the opportunity to dig into questions like these!
