The Brythonic Pantheon | When and Why Rome Left Britain - Magnus Maximus a Turning Point in British History - Celtic History @TheBrythonicPantheon | Uploaded October 2021 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
Why did Rome leave Britain and what were the repercussions of the Roman departure. The ambitions of the Roman General Magnus Maximus, was a turning point for the future of the entire island of Britain.

In 383, the Roman general then assigned to Britain, Magnus Maximus, withdrew troops from northern and western Britain. Crossing to Gaul with his troops. He killed the Western Roman Emperor Gratian and ruled Gaul and Britain.

In 401 or 402 AD Rome faced war with the Visigoths and withdrew most of the remaining Roman troops for the final time and this left Britain in a very exposed position with no organised army and little ability to defend itself.

On the last day of December 406, the Alans, Vandals, and Suebi living east of Gaul crossed the Rhine, and began widespread devastation. Britain feared that a Germanic crossing of the Channel into Britain was next.

Constantine iii took charge of the British defences, raised an army and crossed the channel to bring Gaul back under control.
