The Brythonic Pantheon | Goddess Rhiannon, Epona and The Mabinogion @TheBrythonicPantheon | Uploaded May 2021 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
Was there any historical basis for the Goddess Rhiannon? Was Rhiannon, the Noble Lady of the Otherworld character brought to us in the Mabinogi, a medieval retelling of the mythology of an earlier horse Goddess. The similarities between Epona, Rhiannon and the Goidelic Morrigan suggests there was.

Rigantona was an ancient Brythonic word for "Great Queen" and the name Rhiannon is thought to have been derived from it. This name then shares the same linguistic meaning as that of The Morrigan. The Goddess Macha who was one of the triple goddess of The Morrigan was also a horse Goddess, just like Epona and Rhiannon, who were also venerated as a triple goddesses. There are to many similarities for them to not have some archetypal connection.
