David Fincher is the most controlling director alive. From spending 18 months researching Zodiac to needing nearly 100 takes for scenes in The Social Network, his impossible standards make his films feel almost engineered.
His first film, Alien 3, was a nightmare. Studio interference and fights over the script and final cut left Fincher hating the film more than anyone else. It nearly ended his career before it began, but it taught him something. If he was going to survive in Hollywood, he couldn’t just direct movies. He had to control them.
From Se7en to Fight Club to Zodiac to The Social Network, Fincher built a career out of precision.
