Organisms - specifically, pests - are specialists or generalists depending on the species they target. A specialist pest only targets a narrow range (maybe just one) of organisms, while a generalist targets many.
Whether or not a pest is a generalist or specialist is important for farmers to know about their pests because it impacts their ability to spread and thrive in the growing environment. It can also change control methods. For instance, if you're trying to contain the movement of a specialist pest to one part of the environment, you might be able to separate groups of the target crop with groups of other crops. If the pest is a generalist, separation by what is essentially strip cropping will fail.
