What safety equipment do you actually need for woodturning?

At an absolute minimum, a pair of safety glasses with a proper impact rating. Not sunglasses. Not readers. Safety glasses rated for impact. Better than that is a full-frame face shield with a polycarbonate visor, which gives you broader coverage and protects the sides of your face too.

If you want face and lung protection at the same time, a powered respirator is the right answer. It has a polycarbonate visor and a powered air filter built in, which means you are not relying on a mask seal. If that is not within budget, a half mask or cloth mask will do the job, but make sure it is rated at FFP2 minimum. If you are using sprays, aerosols, or lacquers, go up to FFP3.

Ear defenders are worth having if your machine is particularly noisy. Most people do not wear them routinely, but if your lathe has an aggressive growl, they are sensible.

Dust extraction at the lathe is the thing people underestimate most. Fine dust is the long-term risk. A small workshop extractor is not expensive, and if you do not have one, keep the doors and windows open and keep your mask on while you sweep up.
