The theft of the crown jewels of France from the Louvre Museum in Paris is one of the biggest stories of 2025 and is already being called the heist of the century in some quarters and a national disaster for France. It has rocked the art-world and triggered a sweeping investigation into the loss of €88 million worth of jewellery.
In this video from History Calling I’m going to tell you exactly what was stolen from the Louvre, share with you the history of the items taken from the Apollo Gallery, how the Louvre robbers got away with it, and what I think has likely happened to the stolen gems. I will also compare this theft to other famous thefts from museums, other buildings and high-profile targets around the world, including the British Museum in London, Kim Kardashian’s Paris robbery in 2016 and the theft of the Irish crown jewels from Dublin Castle in 1907.
The items taken from the Louvre are already listed on Interpol’s Stolen Works of Art Database and they are Empress Eugenie’s Diamond Bow Brooch; emerald earrings from Marie-Louise’s Parure; an emerald necklace from Marie-Louis’s Parure; one of a pair of sapphire earrings of Queens Marie-Amelie and Hortense, a sapphire necklace of Queens Marie-Amelie and Hortense; a sapphire diadem of Queens Marie-Amelie and Hortense and a reliquary brooch. A pearl diadem of Empress Eugenie was recovered from the scene having been damaged and dropped by the robbers.
All the jewels date from France’s first and second empires and are irreplaceable. These are national treasures, pieces of French heritage, and symbols of centuries of royal history, making the Louvre robbery a huge cultural loss for France which can never be repaired.
