What exactly is a mythosaur, and why are they important to Mandalorian culture? In Star Wars Legends, mythosaurs were massive creatures that dominated the planet that would come to be called Mandalore. Conquerors came to the planet, drove them to extinction, and took their skulls as their insignia. Those people became what we know to be Mandalorians. In The Mandalorian we hear a new story. Instead of killing off the mythosaurs, Mandalore the Great tamed and rode one, and took its skull as the symbol of the Mandalorian people, who then established mines and a city around the beast’s lair. Both the canon and Legends stories are similar, involving the domination of the mythosaur in some way, and then adoption of its skull as a symbol for all of Mandalore.
