Derek Lieu | What Video Editing Software Professional Trailer Editors Use @DerekLieu | Uploaded August 2020 | Updated October 2024, 15 minutes ago.
Most professional movie and game trailer editing houses use Avid Media Composer or Premiere Pro (I use Premiere Pro too!) and here's why...
The tl;dr
Most trailer houses got started on Avid Media Composer back when it was basically the only option and continued using it to this day. Some changed over to Final Cut Pro before version X, and then switched to Premiere. New trailer houses generally choose either Avid or Premiere Pro, and very few use Final Cut Pro X or any other alternative editing softwares.
I got started on Premiere 5.1 (Before CS or CC), switched to editing on Final Cut Pro and stayed there until Final Cut Pro X came out, which is when I switched to Premiere Pro CS 5.5 and stayed on that until present day.
I keep an eye on Final Cut Pro X, but it still has some dealbreakers like having no Replace Edit at Match Frame function. I'm also keeping an eye on Da Vinci Resolve because seeing an editing software being built from the ground up for modern systems is very exciting, and so far it seems to be well designed and smooth to use.
If you'd like a video about the differences between Avid and Premiere Pro and/or a video about how to choose the editing software best suited for you and trailer editing, please leave a comment!

ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm Derek Lieu and I'm a game trailer editor! I got my start in the movie trailer industry as an assistant editor at a house which produced trailers for: The Matrix Trilogy, Spider-Man, Pirates of the Caribbean and many more.
Over many years I worked as an editor and started making fan trailers for games, until eventually I got jobs at game trailer houses in Los Angeles where I worked on games like Mortal Kombat X, Shadow of Mordor and lots of LEGO games. Independently I've helped make trailers for games like: Half-Life: Alyx, Firewatch, Dead Cells, Subnautica, Spelunky 2, Ooblets and BattleBlock Theater.
I'm using this channel to teach people about the art of making trailers via video essays, tutorials, reviews, and behind-the-scenes looks at my own work. I think about trailers a lot both for work and fun, so I have A LOT to say about them.
