I haven't done a whole lot of what it's like to travel sober, and this certainly isn't a great example. But you can still have a good time without drinking, even on an entire street that's practically made of beer.
Thanks to Aludra1978 for the recommendation to check out Bangkok's famous Khao San Road, called "The Center of the Backpacking Universe" in The Beach by Alex Garland. It's where everyone goes to meet, dance, eat and drink.
I spent an entire night out and I try to shed a little light on some of the other things you can do on Khao San Road other than knocking back the drinks. (hint: there's not a ton, but it's still a good time)
While it may not be as poetic as "the center of the backpacking universe," someone please quote me in the future for "If you like Eminem and doing Whipits, this is your place."
