There are just over 147,000 people living in Texas with Temporary Protected Status. The Department of Homeland Security says TPS was always meant to be temporary and has encouraged immigrants to leave the U.S. voluntarily. Some immigration attorneys say many of the countries people with protected status came from are still not safe to return to.
