With Scream 7 opening to the biggest box office debut in franchise history, it seems almost certain that Scream 8 will move forward. But if the series continues, what course correction does the franchise need?
In this clip from one of my Patreon livestreams, I talk about what Scream 8 should do differently after the mixed reception to the recent films. One of the biggest problems the franchise has faced recently is rushing the scripts. Scream VI had a one-year turnaround, and it shows in a movie with some strong ideas but sloppy execution.
Another issue is building the films around gimmicks. Scream 7 leaned heavily on bringing back legacy characters and cameos, rather than focusing on a strong story. The franchise works best when it has something sharp to say about horror movies and the industry.
Going forward, the series might need to slow down, wait for a strong concept, and possibly take bigger creative swings. Whether that means centering the story around Sydney Prescott, doing a wild spin-off inspired by the Stab movies, or even taking the franchise somewhere completely new, the key is breathing fresh life into the formula.
What do you think?
What should Scream 8 do to keep the franchise fresh?
