What actually makes somebody a MUSIC PRODUCER?
That question is becoming harder to answer — not because music production suddenly changed overnight, but because the title “music producer” has become increasingly misunderstood.
In this episode of Fake Music Producers, I’m looking at something bigger than one person, one argument, or one era of hip-hop.
Context matters.
If somebody did not physically make the beat, does that automatically mean they did not produce the record?
Not necessarily.
A person can contribute to the production of a record by developing the concept, directing musicians or beatmakers, making creative decisions, shaping arrangements, selecting sounds, guiding performances, and determining what the finished record should become.
That is different from falsely claiming that you personally created something you didn't create.
Those distinctions matter.
The internet has a tendency to compress complicated histories into simple accusations: REAL or FAKE. PRODUCER or NOT A PRODUCER.
But people's careers come from different eras, different workflows, different technology, different studios, different responsibilities, and different definitions of production.
If you're going to publicly discuss somebody's career — especially while using their full name — I believe ALL relevant variables should be considered.
I'm not taking sides.
In fact, I can disagree with somebody's philosophy, methods, or opinions and STILL believe their history deserves to be represented with proper context.
That's what this Fake Music Producers series is really about.
The title “Music Producer” has become tainted, stretched, commercialized and misunderstood. Now we're reaching a point where people are trying to correct the definition — while sometimes oversimplifying it in the opposite direction.
So let's actually talk about what producing a RECORD means.
