See the Pattern | What Powers the Movement of the Plates? Convection or Something Else? Electronic Tectonics Part 1/2 @SeethePattern | Uploaded 3 years ago | Updated 1 day ago
We can see that the Earths crust is sub-divided into plates whose relative motions are well know. How these motions are powered is question that is open to debate. Convectional potential can only account for 4% of the total crustal energy expenditure. We would also expect to find the hottest areas to be in the mid ocean ridges and lowest in the subduction zones but what we actually find is the opposite of this. Deformation from tidal forces is another possibility to supply energy to this process, but this only supplies 0.01% of the energy consumed in tectonic friction. Recent research has found a wide variety of evidence that electric and magnetic fields associated with tidal and seismic deformation, though the origin of these is unknown.

Let explore Charles Chandlers concept of Electronic Tectonics and how it might be able to answer some of these fundamental question about how our crust operates.
