This clip looks at part played by the NUM's decision not to hold a ballot in splitting the Miners and undermining support for the strike.
At the time the NUM argued that the ballot was unnecessary as 80% of miners were out on strike. The Nottinghamshire Miners argued that this was both illegal and undemocratic. This unfortunately supported the narrative that Mrs Thatcher wanted to get across that the unions were undemocratic and a threat to British Society and therefore had to be defeated.
