Of Rome's four major papal basilicas, this is the one I'd tell you not to skip in 2026.

Santa Maria Maggiore sits a few blocks from Termini and is open every day, free to enter. Inside you'll find 5th-century mosaics, a gilded ceiling, and the icon of Salus Populi Romani that Pope Francis prayed before 126 times during his papacy.

He's also buried here now. A simple marble tomb inscribed "Franciscus." Pilgrims and travelers stop in throughout the day to pay respects.
