Ask people what makes Martha's Vineyard special and you'll hear about who you might run into.

Author, Ashton Lattimore says it's the opposite: the porches. The rocking chairs. The woods up in the Highlands, away from the beach. People reading, sitting with family, doing nothing in particular.

Through personal experience and her research for her newest novel, Lattimore found that's exactly what was drawing Black families there a hundred years ago, too. Rest as the whole point.

Her novel RUNNER is set on the Vineyard in 1923, and is a Grio Book Club pick of the month.
