What is the genetic map of Europe? Now in this video, we are going to tour the European continent through the lens of genetics, looking at the different genetic markers in different areas of the continent, seeing the similarities and differences across regions.
And let’s start in southeast Europe. What do we know about the Y-DNA and mt haplogroups in this part of the continent? Now for reference, in this video I am going to focus on the main haplogroups that are most common in different regions, as opposed to every haplogroup that is present in that region. With that being said, and if we start on the Y-DNA side, I2a1 is the most common paternal haplogroup in many regions of southeast Europe (at around 20% to over 50% broadly speaking). It is the most common Y-DNA haplogroup in countries like Bosnia and Herzegovina for example, with I2a found in around 50–60% of Bosnian men.
