The world is shaping up for a revolution in aviation. Many companies in the UK and globally are already developing novel vehicle technologies including drones, advanced air mobility vehicles and zero-carbon regional aircraft. But to benefit from these new markets every aspect of the wider aviation system needs to evolve radically and quickly.

The Future Flight Challenge aims to help the UK deliver the aviation revolution by ensuring:
• air space management systems evolve
• new infrastructure concepts are designed
• cyber-secure / connected digital systems are created
• new business models are developed.

In addition, new regulations and standards in many areas need to develop and public concerns around noise, sustainability, intrusion and safety must be addressed. Linking new entrants, established global players, academia and regulators the Challenge encourages them to jointly develop new aviation system concepts and work with communities at an early stage. Watch his equipment in action https://www.instagram.com/reel/CUIbTrAgyPz/ Making aircraft from composite metals is an important step to saving fuel and weight - making flying more environmentally friendly. But the composite materials are more vulnerable to lightning strikes that older aluminium airplanes, which means they need specially-designed panels to protect them from storms. Those panels need testing before they go up in the air, which is where Chris and his team come in. Chris is a Laboratory Manager at the Advanced High Voltage Engineering Research Centre at Cardiff University. He operates equipment capable of delivering thousands of volts in a fraction of a second - in other words, artificial lightning. This is used to simulate how different materials stand up to being struck by lightning. Chris and his team advise companies on how well their panels performed in their test rig, and potential ways to improve resistance to lightning damage. Its not just aircraft, though - Chris has also assisted in research on lightning strikes on trees in tropical rainforests, and regularly helps students with their projects. Were quite open as a test facility, says Chris. People could come to us and well probably take on stuff that other labs wouldnt because were not really profit-making.
