UKRI Stories | How satellite data is helping us fight climate change @UKResearchandInnovation | Uploaded November 2021 | Updated October 2024, 32 minutes ago.
Satellites orbit Earth as quickly as every 90 minutes. As they travel they provide us with critical data about what's happening to our planet's climate. They can monitor wildfires, tell us which gases are in our atmosphere and identify cities and regions that are becoming hotter and drier. A huge network of scientists collect and use this vast amount of data, combining it with other sources, to understand how our climate is changing.

To predict how the climate may respond in the future we turn to Earth system models, such as UKESM1, developed by @NERCscience and @metoffice.

Earth system models describe all the key processes in the Earth system, encompassing the atmosphere, ocean, land and cryosphere, allowing estimates of how Earth’s climate will change dependent on future emissions of greenhouse gases, aerosols, and land use change.

Scientists at the National Centre for Earth Observation, the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, and other NERC supported centres, work together to exploit the wealth of satellite observations to both develop and evaluate UKESM1. This close collaboration has led to UKESM1 being one of the most advanced Earth system models in the world today.

Accurate and robust predictions of future climate change are the foundation of scientific support for policy decisions addressing climate mitigation and adaptation, both at the UK scale and globally.

Data from space and UKESM1 predictions are already helping us combat climate change. Watch the video to find out how it has helped develop four possible future climate pathways, worked with west African governments to help adaptation to changing flood risks and much more.
