The first step to become a Muslim is to take the Shahada, but what does Shahada mean?
To take the shahada is to say with your tongue, heart, and mind: I bear witness that there is no "elah" (true god / lord / deity worthy of worship) other than Allah, and I bear witness that Mohammed is his slave and messenger.
Shahada means bearing witness.
Bearing witness is a confession from one's side that he will be the very evidence of the absolute and exclusive right of Allah to be worshipped. Worship is satisfied by following Allah's commands in all aspects of life without hesitation; whether spiritual, acts of worship, economic, social, or legal. The second part of the shahada is to take the guidance of life from Allah's message sent to prophet Mohammed pbuh, who himself exemplified how to be Allah's slave (worshipper, follower of guidance). Prophet Mohammed is hence the first Muslim, and since he is fully human, we can take him as our role model, to learn about his life, and understand how Allah's message can be one that is materialized into a human walking the earth. Bearing witness does not mean that one is sinless, but it also means that we will recognize our sins against the law as mistakes, fix them, and repent, just like Allah wants us to.
Shahada is the gate to be the exclusive follower of Allah, and hence be free of enslavement to any other person or thing, including one's own self. As Allah only wants to grant us the best life and the best destiny, obedience to Allah is the highest degree of honor and freedom.
