What is "Reformation Day"? To answer that question, it's important to remember that Jesus said:
"I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
- Matthew 16:13-20 ESV
Jesus promised to build a church (singular); One Church, and it would be His Church.
Jesus told the members of His One Church:
[12] “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. [13] When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. [14] He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. [15] All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
- John 16:12-15 ESV
So Jesus's One Church was going to be guided by Jesus (through the Spirit of Truth).
Now, Jesus also said:
"many false prophets will arise and lead many astray."
- Matthew 24:9-14 ESV
So, how do we avoid being lead astray? How do we know if someone is a false prophet?
EASY! We use the system that Jesus set in place, for keeping His Church united in the Truth!
Jesus said:
[15] “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. [16] But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. [17] If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
- Matthew 18:15-17 ESV
If your brother is teaching a false gospel, then they are essentially claiming that anyone preaching the True Gospel is a false teacher; they are therefore sinning against their brother(s).
So, if you use the system that Jesus set up, then the final step is to "tell it to the church", and everyone should listen to the church. This makes perfect sense, seeing as the church is:
"a pillar and buttress of the truth."
- 1 Timothy 3:14-15 ESV
But 1500 years AFTER Jesus created His Church, and promised to guide His Church, and set up a system in which members should respect the authority of His Church, this guy named Martin Luther showed up.
Luther was a member of the Catholic Christian Church, but he refused to listen to the Church. Instead, driven by pride, Luther listened to himself.
So what is "Reformation Day"? It's Pride Day, for Protestants!
