Mills County Historical Museum, Goldthwaite (2026)
You ever hear of a town where having a baby could cost you a free house? Welcome to Goldthwaite, Texas, where the railroad agent who built this place had one rule for newcomers: take a free lot, take a free house, and if your first son comes along, you better name him Goldthwaite.
That's right. The Mills County Historical Museum still has the silver cup to prove it, given in honor of a baby named Goldthwaite Dexter, living proof that the man's deal stuck.
Inside, you'll find the first car ever registered in Mills County, all the way back in 1906. To folks around here at the time, that thing probably looked like it fell out of the sky.
You'll also meet a local legend connected to University of Texas basketball coach Jody Conrad, take a tour through the museum's famous two seat outhouse (pilot and co pilot, naturally), and hear a rattlesnake story that'll make you watch where you sit.
