The Battle of Leyte Gulf was the largest naval battle of World War II, and one of the most controversial moments of the Pacific War. When Admiral William "Bull" Halsey took the U.S. Third Fleet north in pursuit of the Japanese carriers, he left the San Bernardino Strait unguarded, allowing Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita's Center Force to steam toward the vulnerable American invasion fleet.
Only the courageous sailors of Taffy 3 stood between Kurita's powerful battleships and the U.S. landing forces during the legendary Battle off Samar. But what if Halsey had made a different decision?
In this Sea Power alternate history scenario, we explore what might have happened if Task Force 34—including the fast battleships USS Iowa, USS South Dakota, and USS North Carolina—had remained behind to block the San Bernardino Strait.
