High dependency units become overflow spaces. Recovery rooms are transformed into makeshift critical care areas. In some cases, operating theatres themselves become temporary holding areas for patients who cannot safely be extubated.
But these spaces were never designed to function as full intensive care units.
Doctors warn that patients placed in environments without the monitoring, equipment and staffing of a true ICU face greater risks — including infection and complications that may go undetected.
Meanwhile, hospitals are receiving referral after referral.
Sometimes they can't accept a single patient.
And when a critically ill patient can't get an ICU bed early enough, their condition can deteriorate dramatically.
A lack of ICU capacity doesn't just determine where a patient goes. It can change what happens to them.
