Introduction

On August 6, 1945, the United States unleashed an atomic bomb code-named "Little Boy"on Hiroshima, a major Japanese city. The explosion and accompanying radiation caused widespread destruction and loss of life, with the immediate death toll estimated to be between 70,000 and 80,000 individuals. Three days later, on August 9, 1945, a second atomic bomb, codenamed "Fat Man," was detonated on Nagasaki, causing additional destruction and fatalities. The death toll in Nagasaki was estimated at 40,000 to 70,000 persons. The two bombings prompted Japan's capitulation and the end of World War II. The use of atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki remains a contentious and divisive issue due to the tremendous loss of life and long-term health implications for survivors. It also brought up ethical and moral concerns concerning the use of nuclear weapons in wartime.

Niels Bohr

Niels Bohr, a Danish physicist, is best recognized for his pioneering work in quantum theory and atomic structure. In 1913, he proposed the Bohr model, a groundbreaking atomic model. This model used both classical and quantum physics ideas to describe the structure of atoms, specifically the hydrogen atom. It introduced the concept of quantized energy levels for electrons in atoms, which served as the foundation for current quantum mechanics. Bohr made significant contributions to the development of quantum theory, particularly in understanding electron behavior in atoms and the emission of electromagnetic radiation.
